Yankees eye matching MLB home run record

While the New York Yankees saw one lengthy streak end, another continued.

Despite their season-high eight-game winning streak getting stopped Sunday, the Yankees still hit a homer for a team-record 26th straight game.

On Monday, the Yankees will get a chance at matching the major league record for consecutive games with a homer when they host the Toronto Blue Jays in the opener of a three-game series at Yankee Stadium.


Cy Young winners Kershaw, Greinke duel

Cy Young Award winners and former teammates Zack Greinke and Clayton Kershaw will meet for the second time when the Arizona Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Dodgers open a three-game series Monday in Phoenix.

Kershaw went 8 1/3 innings in a 7-1 victory over Greinke at Dodger Stadium on April 14, 2017. Greinke left the Dodgers to sign a six-year, $206.5 million free agent contract with the Diamondbacks in the winter of 2015.


Division leaders Cubs, Braves square off

The Atlanta Braves will take their run-scoring machine to Wrigley Field on Monday to open a four-game series against the host Chicago Cubs in a battle of first-place teams in the National League.

The Braves have reached double-digit runs six times in June, including five games in which they scored at least 12 runs. The most recent came Saturday in a 13-9 shootout against the Washington Nationals.


Mets spat with reporters in clubhouse

CHICAGO (AP) New York Mets manager Mickey Callaway cursed at a reporter, and pitcher Jason Vargas had to be restrained from charging him during a confrontation in the team's clubhouse after a loss Sunday.

The dustup with beat writer Tim Healey of Newsday occurred after the Mets blew a late lead in a 5-3 defeat to the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. There was no physical contact.


Pujols ends STL return with 2 hits, win

ST. LOUIS (AP) In a weekend full of emotional moments, Los Angeles slugger Albert Pujols saved the best for last.

Pujols capped off a stirring three-day return to St. Louis by exchanging jerseys with long-time friend and Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina following the Angels' 6-4 win on Sunday.


Alonso sets Mets rookie mark with 27 HRs

CHICAGO (AP) Pete Alonso has hit his 27th home run, passing Darryl Strawberry for the New York Mets rookie record in just his 77th game.

Alonso hit a solo drive against Chicago Cubs starter Cole Hamels in the fourth inning at Wrigley Field on Sunday. The 24-year-old slugger entered the day second in the majors in home runs, trailing NL MVP Christian Yelich of the Milwaukee Brewers with 29.


Yarbrough, Rays beat A's to split series

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Over four games, the Tampa Bay Rays and Oakland Athletics played about as even as it can get - knowing full well they could meet again in a matter of a few months come playoff time.

Travis d'Arnaud drove in three runs and hit a two-run homer, Austin Meadows hit a three-run double, and the Rays beat the A's 8-2 on Sunday for a split of the four-game series.
